Get your Mylar Bags and Oxygen Absorber's!

Long term food storage. I know you've seen the videos of people feverishly storing 50 pound bags of Rice, 20 pound bags of flour and any number of things and its intimidating.

How about we start somewhere easy with a hedge against inflation in mind? Once again, there are several things you want to keep in mind:

1. Only store what you normally eat
2. Make sure you put down the expiration date of what you store on any re- packaging
3. Put the newer stuff in back of the older stuff
4. Prepare what you store-stop eating out so much!
5. Keep track of what you buy with the Shopping List book
6. Always be ready to help out your neighbors with advice, and put aside some of your stores to give away as things get worse.

Now is the time to store and stock up, before prices go any higher as the amount in packaging decreases. You are now paying more for even less packaged food than normal, yes, there is less food in smaller packaging now.

You will need Mylar bags, oxygen absorber packs, and a heat sealer. Break down items into measurements you normally use. I use 5 cups of flour for the cookies I bake, so I measured out that amount into my Mylar Gallon size bags, with oxygen absorbers. That way, I don't open more than I need to use, exposing food unnecessarily. Package how you use your food. Here is a link for a good set of starter Mylar bags and Oxygen absorbers from Amazon, but you can get them other places.

Store your food in 5 Gallon Buckets with tops on them, in an area of your house that doesn't go through temperature or humidity shifts. They are in the 5 Gallon buckets with lids to guard against moisture and rodents. If its not in a can, put it in a bucket.

Don't forget your water! Get the 5 Gallon jugs at Sam's or Costco and set them aside, there are pumps that you can buy to make it easier to use the water from the jug.

This is the month to go through your linen closet, wash those blankets and comforters, see what you need to replace. Get your garden prepped for next Spring, make sure you put all of those leaves in there so they break down and fertilize your garden beds. If you do any winter planting, get to it!
